About CAP-K9

❤️ MY STORY

I never planned on becoming a dog trainer. But looking back now, I can see that God had this path written for me long before I understood it.

When I was 19, I met a man named Dick Lovelady, a lifelong dog lover with a small training facility. One day he looked at me and said with absolute certainty:
“You’re going to be a dog trainer.”

I laughed and asked him why. I didn’t see anything special — I just loved my dog.
He told me, “You have a rare gift. You can read dogs… and more importantly, they can read you.”

At the time, I didn’t know what he meant, but he said he had met only two people in his whole life that he knew were born to train dogs — me and Joe Simmons, who today owns a training facility of his own.

I started volunteering at Dick’s kennel — cleaning runs, feeding dogs, sweeping floors, doing whatever I could just to learn. I didn’t get paid a dime, but what I gained was priceless.
I was learning how to speak the language of dogs.

Somewhere in those long days — covered in dirt, fur, and love — something inside me awakened. I realized dogs are not “just pets.” They’re souls. They have emotions, fears, and hopes. They speak without words, and all you have to do is pay attention.

That’s when I understood what Dick saw in me long before I saw it in myself.

Training dogs isn’t a job — it’s a calling.
You need patience.
You need compassion.
You need a heart that doesn’t give up when a dog is scared, stubborn, or misunderstood.
You have to love them the way you love your own children.

God gave me that heart.

For decades now, I’ve worked with every kind of dog — fearful, reactive, high-drive, family pets, police dogs, detection dogs, obedience dogs, and everything in between.

And through it all, I’ve learned this:
A dog will give you their whole heart if you just give them your time.

They don’t ask for much — just love, patience, and someone who believes in them.
That’s what I give them. Every single day.

This is more than my career.
This is my purpose.
This is my heart.

This early mentorship became the “foot stamp” that shaped her into the skilled instructor she is today.

Now, while advancing her legal education, Sweet D. Davis is pursuing a powerful mission: to become a K9 attorney and advocate for dogs who cannot speak for themselves. Her goal is to use her legal knowledge and deep understanding of canine behavior to support working dogs, service dogs, and family pets alike. She strives to be the voice for those who give loyalty, devotion, and service every single day.

My Journey

My journey in K9 training has been all about balance — being a wife and mother of four, stepping back when I had twins to focus on my family, and then returning to my passion with more purpose than ever. What began as a hobby quickly became a calling. Training dogs has shaped who I am, teaching me patience, dedication, consistency, and compassion — qualities I bring into every part of my life.

I began working with Sweet M. Davis at just 21 years old. Like many who start in this field, I began at the bottom — cleaning kennels and volunteering — because I knew the value of learning from someone with Sweet’s decades of experience and unmatched knowledge. From those early days, she taught me everything from the foundations of obedience to advanced training, canine narcotics detection, police K9 work, and tracking. I traveled alongside her, assisting in classes and observing real-world training scenarios. I was hooked from day one.

After taking time off to raise my twins, I returned to training with renewed passion and eventually earned my K9 Instructor certification through Sweet’s program. Her mentorship over the years has shaped me not only as a trainer but also as a teacher. The knowledge, hands-on experience, and personal guidance she provided are things I am deeply grateful for — and I carry them with me in every session.

K9 training is more than a profession to me. It is a meaningful part of my life, and I take pride in helping dogs and their owners build confidence, trust, and lasting partnerships — one training session at a time.

• Detection K9 Training – Scent detection and specialized applications

Personal Note

Balancing family life and K9 training has been one of my greatest accomplishments. Being a wife and mother of four — including a set of twins — required stepping back for a season, but it also made me a stronger trainer. Over the years, volunteering and training dogs has become a source of joy and purpose.

I am honored to help people and dogs create healthier, happier lives together — one well-trained dog at a time.
